Hello, happy St Patrick’s Day and many thanks to Lorraine Carpenter who sent me the super image above, recently.

We had great fun today – I say ‘we’ meaning a group of young people I teach in Ballinalee – plus lots of friends, including fiddler John Sullivan and accordionists Michael Lennon and Jim McLoughlin along with a few cows, a tractor, bales of hay, bunting, a butter churn and plenty of music and song, all on a fairly large trailer – in Longford Parade and Ballymahon Parade, with a quick spot at a local nursing home in between. The weather was great and plenty were out to line the streets. It’s about 38 years since I was last doing something like this – and all dressed up a la 1916. . . photos will follow soon. . .

Many thanks to Liz and Malachy Heaney for all their work in getting this all to happen – the Ballinalee band float won first prize in the Longford Parade which was a lovely bonus.

Lots on the agenda but just a quick natter (before I keel over – I’m not as young as I used to be!) – tonight, if you are in the vicinity of Bristol, in England, Ian Storror has a fantastic evening lined up with Brejeiro: The Choro music of Brazil (see below for details) and tomorrow night, if you are anywhere near the Longford / Roscommon border in Ireland, I’m going to a great session at the Shannon Bar, Tarmonbarry, Co Roscommon.

I’ll be back with news of the Timo Alakotila new solo CD; Dik Cadbury’s new CD and the drawings of David Eyres who has widened my use of pencils. . .2H to 8B! I was always a 2B girl. . .

See below for various dates – my workshops around the country and further afield are filling up and a few more are being planned; I’m doing a 5 for 4 deal on skype lessons (see www.karentweed.com) and the 10th anniversary of the Severn Suite (which I did with the marvellous John Kirkpatrick) is happening in October – more about the evening and relevant workshops soon!

Lastly, I was delighted to receive 2 super bits of wisdom quotes; the first from James Latchford (a grand accordionist in Worcestershire) :

“there are three things that should always be left to the experts:
– brain surgery, parachute packing, and plastering”

And from Steve Evans, this made me smile broadly :

“Remember you are not as bad as your worst performance”.

Have fun, wherever you are.

Brejeiro: The Choro music of Brazil

The Hen & Chicken, 210 North St, Bristol, BS3 1JF
Thursday 17 March 2016
Doors 7.30 for 8.15pm start
£10/£8 (OAP’s/students) Acoustic / World / Jazz

Dave Griffiths & Mike Pryor (Mandolins and Cavaquinhos)
Rachel Parede (Flute), Knud Stuwe (Guitar), Andy Fuller (Percussion)

Tonight sees a re-launch of the band Brejeiro with a new look line-up, playing the uplifting acoustic music of South America.

Brejeiro will transport you to Brazil through the sunshine and sparkle of Brazilian Choro music. An infectious and uplifting mix of mandolins and guitar propelled by Latin percussion, Brejeiro combine driving rhythms and haunting melodies, skilfully improvised and exquisitely arranged, capturing the essence of Brazil. From its roots in folk song and the pulsating rhythms of the Samba the music encapsulates the fusion of South American Latin rhythms, North American jazz and the evolution of the mandolin and its music from Portugal.

It is strange for such joyous music to be called Choro, which quite literally translates as “to cry”. It was born in the middle of the 19th century when musicians began experimenting by fusing together Brazilian folk tunes and European harmony with Afro-Brazilian and native rhythms.

Often described as Brazilian jazz, Choro became the music of the people and spread throughout Brazil. “This music is ageless”, says trumpeter Silverio Pontes. “In a Choro group, one is 70, another 15, and the third 40 … This music is… like a communion. For they all are taking part in this great thing that’s already over 100 years old. That is fantastic.”

Brejeiro respectfully walk in the footsteps of this unique tradition adding their own unique line up of twin mandolins leading and weaving delicate harmony, pulsating guitar and innovative percussion. ‘La Llorona’ celebrates the music of Brazilian composer Pixinguinha, recognised as one of the greatest flute players and improvisers of his generation, and the virtuoso mandolin player and composer, Jacob do Bandolim along with Mike Pryor’s original composition ‘La Frontiera’ adding a contemporary flavour.

Choro may have begun over 150 years ago but it is still very alive today and still evolving, try it for yourselves and listen to the video clip. http://jazzata.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32243ec3fe268b962ec52185d&id=b86fe98d3e&e=5028ca49a7
